ISHE “SUGAR SHAY” SMITH (28-8, 12 KOs, Las Vegas, NV) Born July 22, 1978; Turned Pro July 29, 2000

• Last Fight: December 18, 2015 – Victory by unanimous decision against Tommy Rainone

• Exploding onto the Scene: Known for his counterpunching skills, Smith dominated in his first 14 professional fights before defeating Randall Bailey in 2004 to become the WBC Continental Americas, USBA, and WBA NABO welterweight champion. In 2013, Smith beat Cornelius Bundrage in a split decision to claim the IBF World Super Welterweight title.

• Reality Star: Smith became a recognizable face to many Americans after being cast in the premiere season of boxing reality series, The Contender in 2004. Paired with many of his former contenders, Smith performed well throughout the season, with many notable victories – including a “Fan-Favorite” bout versus nemesis Anthony Bonsante.

• His Big Day: In 2013, the city of Las Vegas named February 23 “Ishe “Sugar Shay” Smith Day” in recognition of his charitable works and community focus.

• Thoughts of Galarza: As he put it himself, “I’m focused on this fight but my goal is to get the world title back.” Smith went on to say, “I am totally focusing on the opponent at hand. I would like to fight again this year if possible, but my main focus is Galarza. He is coming off of a loss, where he got stopped. I have been in there with everybody, and the guys I lost to were controversial decisions. I have been around the block so my main opponent on September 16 is myself. There are levels to this game and I am going to treat this fight at such."

FRANK “NOTORIOUS” GALARZA (17-1-2, 11 KOs, Brooklyn, NY) Born August 18, 1985; Turned Pro September 1, 2010

• Last Fight: November 14, 2015 – round 6 loss to Jarrett Hurd

• Painful Beginnings: After losing both of his parents at a young age, Galarza became involved in the Brooklyn criminal scene and was headed towards a tragic end. Following the murder of his brother, however, Frank decided to turn his own life around and returned to school, graduating as an electrician. To further avoid the lure of the streets, Galarza soon decided to return to the sport of his father and made boxing his life’s focus.

• Fast-track to Professional Status: Galarza was named New York Golden Gloves champion in 2010 and shortly thereafter turned pro – having only 11 amateur fights on his 6-month amateur record. That September, he won his first professional fight with a 20-second TKO over Nicholas Morris.

• Shot at Redemption: Speaking about his upcoming bout with Smith, Galarza said, “I know Ishe is an experienced fighter but this is a shot for me to get back to the top level. I can’t wait to show the boxing world what I am made of.”

• Youth Fighting Forward: Galarza’s non-profit organization, Youth Fighting Forward, targets young people who have been affected by violence and crime and uses boxing and MMA as a means to help them develop life skills and improve their outlook on life. Actress and close friend Susan Sarandon is a champion of the fighter and his work, supporting Galarza both in the promotion of Youth Fighting Forward and appearing ringside at his fights.
